Chord Solo Introduction

35.00

Improvising Chord solos is a lot of fun and is really about combining the beautiful Jazz harmony with Jazz improvisation. But chord solos can seem almost impossible to get started with because it appears to be technically very demanding. There are, however, ways to approach them that will help you overcome that problem. These lessons are built around easy chord solos and exercises on well-known standards. Material that shows how you can start thinking of the chords as something you can improvise with.

The main thing to learn is to start thinking of voicings as variations and melodies, not static and separate grips. Melodies are notes next to each other, not separate instances.

Easy Chord Solo Etudes - Pent up House

Playing chord solos seems like an impossible skill to learn: You have to improvise a melody and then harmonize that melody note for note at the same time.  That might look like you need 3000 voicings and 10000 inversions, but that is not true at all.

This lesson download will show you how you can play great sounding chord solos with a limited vocabulary, and use a few voicings to build from. You will learn:

- A simple approach to making chord solo lines

- Practical technique for playing chord solo

- What to focus on make chord solo lines sound good

Bb Blues - Chord Solo Introduction

Chord Solos both sound great and are very impressive when you play them! But they are also very difficult to play, and it seems like you have to learn all chord voicings for all chord types in all keys and all inversions to be able to play them.

But of course, you can also learn to play chord solos in a more practical way. In this lesson package, I am going over 3 etudes to show you how you can start with a more limited set of chord voicings and build that out to a chord vocabulary that makes it possible to solo.

You will learn:

- To play 3 Bb Blues Chord solos
- Techniques for building a chord solo vocabulary
- To use Chromatic and Diatonic Passing chords
- To develop your own chord solo lines on a Bb Blues

Ladybird - Chord Solo Etudes and Exercises

This lesson will teach you two things:

- A Set of Etudes to teach you chord-solo phrases

- An approach to organize and practice chords to make it easier to improvise with them.

The Exercises and etudes in this lesson are constructed to make it easier to play chord solos. Often it seems impossible to remember so many voicings and then also come up with solo lines using them. The material in this lesson organizes the voicings so that it is a lot easier to play lines. The etudes on Ladybird use this system which also makes them easier to play.

Chord Solo Etudes - Solar

The goal of this lesson is to show you some exercises and how to make your own exercises to build your chord soloing skills. The material from the exercises is put to use in the 3 etude choruses so that you can use that to start using them in your own playing.

The etudes will help you start to:

- Not have to think about each chord when playing chord solos

- Create a practical vocabulary of chord solos

-  Learn to think more in melody

- Combine chords to phrases, not just separate chords

This part of the lesson contains a short analysis of the chords of Solar, some exercises.

Autumn Leaves - Chord Solo

Most of what seems difficult about playing chord solos are probably about how you think about it. If you try to think about individual chords then playing a chord solo is like solving complicated mathematical equations, but that is not how you should approach it.

This lesson is built around an easy medium-tempo chord solo on Autumn Leaves. The solo is transcribed and analyzed and you also have an article that includes exercises for the chords giving you different ways to think about improvising a solo.

Summertime - Chord Solo

You listen to people like Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass and Kenny Burrell playing chord solos and you want to play solos like that. Playing Chord solos is a big part of especially the hard-bop era guitar vocabulary.

In this video lesson package I have recorded and transcribed a three chorus chord solo on summertime  The lesson includes exercises and a 3 video analysis of the solo
