Description
In this lesson I set out to try and demonstrate how I use drop2 voicings in my comping and also pass on some general thoughts on playing in a rhythm section and backing up a soloist.
The lesson is built around a 3 chorus improvised performance that I did where I am comping with drop2 voicings on the changes of the standard “There will never be another you”
It is not that difficult to play, and is a good realistic version of how you can comp behind a soloist without getting in the way but still make the harmony clear and play some interesting things.
The download package includes:
- Performance video and mp3 (video with and without transcription)
- backing track mp3 from the performance
- 41 minute video lesson on the solo and how it is constructed
- PDF and GuitarPro transcription of the solo
- Performance notes
Some of the material I cover includes:
-
Using Drop2 voicings on a standard
-
Chromatic passing chords and techniques to play them
-
What sort of melodies you can use when comping and how you can come up with them
-
Adding extensions to chords and different types of drop2 voicings on the same progression
-
Voicie leading and connecting melodic ideas across a standard
-
Having a flow in you comping and a larger idea of where you are in the solo
-
Some solid phrases with Drop2 chords that I learnt from different players.
I hope you can use this transcription and the video lesson as an inspiration for your own comping and that it can help you develop new ideas and melodies with some of my approaches.
