How to really use Drop2 voicings

We can spend hours practicing inversions without being able to use jazz chords on a real piece of music.

If you have worked on studying and practicing jazz chords and want to seek them put to use then this lesson is what you are looking for.

  • Solid comping rhythms and melodies on an F blues
  • Voicing techniques to open up more possibilities
  • How to comp clearly and beautifully with Drop2 chords.

This lesson is a transcription of 6 choruses of comping on a 12 bar F blues using Drop2 voicings.

The Two exercises and transcriptions will give you some examples of how you might apply Drop2 voicings to a 12 bar Blues. The goal is to give you a solid set of voicings and help you use these voicings in a piece of music. Since a Blues is a very common progression that most of us are familiar with it is a good place to start.

Learning to Comp with Drop2

The examples in this video are transcriptions of how I comp on a Blues using only Drop2 voicings. The transcription is in itself a great example, but you can also use it as inspiration for your own comping.

The exercises in this article are covering the basic material that you want to have in your system and use to make music.

When you comp on a blues then you are making melodies with the chords that tell their own stories and complement the soloist, this is what the transcriptions illustrate.

Putting it to use on a Blues in F

All the chord voicings in the world are not worth anything if you can’t put them together in a musical way. Drop 2 voicings are important for almost any type of bop oriented jazz, and also the chords you will find most of the time with Wes Montgomery and George Benson.

Real examples as a short-cut

Having some good examples of how to use these voicings can save you hours of experimentation or transcribing, and is a solid way to get into this type of playing.

There are not many good comping lessons around, most of the time education focuses on the solos.

If you are unhappy with the purchase I will refund your payment.

Check it out now and get started working on developing your comping skills taking them to new levels and really digging into what is really a classic jazz sound.
