F Jazz Blues - Building A Chord Vocabulary

Being able to make music with chords is not about knowing as many voicings as possible. You need to work on connecting the different voicings and give you something that you can turn into music. Knowing all Drop2 voicings and all Shell-voicings doesn't mean that you can comp.

This lesson demonstrates how to build a compact and simple set of voicings and also shows you how you combine the chords and make music with them.

What you will learn:

- Effective voicing set for an F Jazz Blues
- Connecting different types of voicings
- Making phrases with Jazz chords

F Blues Comping Etude #1

This lesson consists of 2 examples, first one is a chorus of basic blues comping, and the second is a 2 chorus etude with lots of rhythmical and harmonic variations, riff ideas and melodies.  In the video I demonstrate how to use the material and give a detailed explanation of the choices I made.

The download includes 31:44 minutes HD video, PDF + GuitarPro sheet music and mp3 backing track and examples,

F Blues Comping Etude #2 - Riffs and Rhythm

This 2nd lesson on Blues comping on an F blues is based around using riffs and developing a way to take riffs through the form. If you listen to piano players like Wynton Kelly, Horace Silver or Red Garland you will often hear them take a specific pattern and repeat it to create an interesting groovy background for a soloist.

This lesson is for the biggest part about creating and using these riff rhythms, but to make it easy to work with them.

F Blues Comping - Chromatic Passing Chords

One of the most beautiful things about playing Jazz chords is that you can also add chromatic movement to the sound. With that, you can keep it interesting and surprising and also add energy forward motion to the music.

But it can be difficult to get it to make sense, and not sound unnatural. This lesson download gives you 3 etudes on a Blues in F and some examples of how you can add chromatic passing chords to your comping. The 12 bar blues is a great place to explore this simply because that is a progression you already know very well and it will be a lot easier for you to get it into your playing.

Blues Chord Melody Solo Exercises

This lesson contains three etudes on a Bb blues and a set of exercises. This will help you develop the ability to play solos and accompany yourself at the same time.

The way I learned this was from playing examples and improvising. Therefore, instead of giving you a lot of technical exercises I thought it better focus on some simple and short examples of how to play like this. The chance that you get stuck in technical exercises is also smaller if you are spending time playing real music.

The form I am using is a 12-bar Bb Jazz Blues. The Blues is a practical choice. First, because it is a form you are already very familiar with. Second, because The Blues lends itself to Call-response and repeating melodies.

Playing improvised solos in a Solo Jazz Guitar setting is a very demanding thing to do. It requires combining several layers into your playing at the same time: Melody, Chords, and Bass. In this download, I have included 4 technical exercises and 3 chorus examples. These will help you develop your skills and start you playing improvised solo in a chord melody setting.
