Emily Remler – How To Reinvent a Standard

Emily Remler is a great example of how you can mix modern and more traditional ideas. This video is analyzing both the reharmonization or arrangement of Softly as in a Morning Sunrise and some of the phrases she plays over it in her solo.

In the video I discuss how she uses modern and modal harmony in the reharmonization but also how some of her phrases are clearly coming out of a tradition based on players like Wes Montgomery and Joe Pass.

Emily Remlers solo on this tune is incredible melodic and groovy and in many ways a really great example of mainstream or traditional approaches meeting more modern postbop concepts.

The tempo is great for some real swinging 8th note lines but also slow enough to have some interesting triplet rhythms and double time phrases.

The solo is from the Emily Remler album “East to Wes” which is a tribute to Wes Montgomery and also features Hank Jones, Buster Williams and Marvin Smitty Smith.

Hope you like it!
